INTRODUCTION

On February 23, 2017, the Fordham FinTech Network brought together leaders of the blockchain world with those in professional services for the Blockchain in Capital Markets and Accounting event. Each of the Big 4 Professional services firms have their own blockchain or distributed ledger teams to service their clients and to better develop the technology within their firm. The Big 4 firms have become a corner stone between the blockchain companies to the banks or firms that want to implement this new technology. Accenture also has a blockchain team with heavy research on its practicalities, allowing for blockchain firms to better connect with clients. ConsenSys is the leading blockchain developing and consulting firm that builds decentralized applications on the Ethereum Blockchain, while consulting with enterprises to construct blockchain systems to meet their specific needs.

Blockchain is a leading technology and a sector within FinTech. Bitcoin is a digital currency that can be used for payments and to transfer value between users. The underlying technology of Bitcoin is blockchain, or a distributed ledger. Since the creation of the Bitcoin Blockchain, more blockchains have been created to meet specifications of different industries or purposes. The Ethereum blockchain, being the second largest, contains an open source programming language that allows for dApps, or decentralized applications, to be built on it by developers. The Ethereum blockchain has opened the technology to be applied to many more industries and utilizes “smart contracts”.

Review

Blockchain in Capital Markets and Accounting was a great success. Many thanks to all the panelists, Mr.Vigilante, Dr. Hsu, the FiN members who worked with us and who joined us at the event.

Our discussion went from a lot of hot topics regarding the application of blockchain technology in the near future, with many illustrations of the blockchain use cases in some industries, to career advises to students and the encouragement of independent thinking, and, imagination.

"The genie is out of the bottle", citing Chris.

We believe that there's is a whole world open to imagination by Fintech.
